IEC 62368 & IEC 61000 Standards for Data Center You Need to Know

The data center is the backbone of the new digital era. How to ensure the product is compliant and achieve the quality result?

Although the power supply in the data center is under strictly managed, the undesired power may still occur. This threat will lead to a data center hardware fault and causes businesses and end users inconveniences and irreparable loss. Therefore, IEC 62368 required a series of tests to ensure the data center hardware, such as servers, switches, and routers, is able to withstand the power abnormality. It is the manufacturers’ responsibility to conduct the Hipot and continuity test during the production line to ensure they deliver the compliant and high-quality product to the end users. In addition to IEC 62368, data center hardware generally is required to conduct the EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) test. Commonly required standards are IEC 61000-3-2 (Limits for harmonic current emissions) and IEC 61000-4-11 (Voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage variations immunity tests). The harmonic current may affect the performance of the hardware and cause fires. In the long term, it will cause the voltage waveform of the power supply grid to be abnormal and affect other electrical products unable to operate stably. Therefore, to protect the quality of the power supply grid and the performance of the equipment, IEC 61000-3-2 strictly limits the harmonic currents generated by the equipment. The power system may malfunction, instantaneous overload, or random voltage changes within a period, which interfere with the operation of the equipment. Therefore, IEC 61000-4-11 requires verification of the performance and operation of equipment when it is subject to supply voltage dips, interruptions, and sags.
