In the post-pandemic era, people make full use of digital technologies as part of their life. The usage of video streaming, the hybrid experience of sports, and wearable smart devices are surging in popularity and driving the development of big data, AI, blockchain, and the Metaverse. The data center is the backbone of the new digital era. To provide a better user experience, today’s data center not only focuses on its performance but also on improving energy management, power shortage or disruption, etc.* In this issue, we will look through the data center-related standards – IEC 62368 (electrical safety test) and IEC 61000 (EMC). The key to the tests is to verify the hardware wouldn’t interfere with the power system and can withstand the power and electromagnetic in an abnormal condition.
How to ensure the product is compliant and achieve the quality result?
Although the power supply in the data center is under strictly managed, the undesired power may still occur. This threat will lead to a data center hardware fault and causes businesses and end users inconveniences and irreparable loss. Therefore, IEC 62368 required a series of tests to ensure the data center hardware, such as servers, switches, and routers, is able to withstand the power abnormality. It is the manufacturers’ responsibility to conduct the Hipot and continuity test during the production line to ensure they deliver the compliant and high-quality product to the end users. In general, the production line Hipot test conduct for 1 second and use 2000 to 4000 Vac or 2828 to 5656 Vdc testing voltage. [Learn more about servers safety tests]
In addition to IEC 62368, data center hardware generally is required to conduct the EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) test. Commonly required standards are IEC 61000-3-2 (Limits for harmonic current emissions) and IEC 61000-4-11 (Voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage variations immunity tests). The harmonic current may affect the performance of the hardware and cause fires. In the long term, it will cause the voltage waveform of the power supply grid to be abnormal and affect other electrical products unable to operate stably. Therefore, to protect the quality of the power supply grid and the performance of the equipment, IEC 61000-3-2 strictly limits the harmonic currents generated by the equipment. The power system may malfunction, instantaneous overload, or random voltage changes within a period, which interfere with the operation of the equipment. Therefore, IEC 61000-4-11 requires verification of the performance and operation of equipment when it is subject to supply voltage dips, interruptions, and sags.
Ikonix Got the Right Solution
To ensure the manufactured product’s quality meets today’s demand, selecting a reliable and high-quality tester is the key. Iknoix provides a completed data center solution to help manufacturers solve their test challenges. Many data center hardware manufacturers have chosen the SE Series Electrical Safety Analyzer for their production lines. It provides up to 5KVac and 6KVdc for the Hipot test. Also, a bundle with continuity tests (optional) can meet the requirements of the IEC 62368 production line test. For the EMC test IEC 61000-3-2 and IEC 61000-4-11, we recommend you choose the EAL–5000 Series Programmable AC Power Source. The advanced high power density design integrates powerful performance into a thinner and lighter volume. This series completely covers the capacity range of 500VA to 6000VA and the frequency range of 5Hz to 1,200Hz. The high-power data center hardware can choose EAL-5040 and EAL-5060 to meet the need. This series has two packages, standard and advanced, to provide flexible waveform test functions. The advanced package has a Library function that is customized for production line testing. This function is built-in commonly used waveform tests and measurements required by IEC 61000. The complex test procedure allows the operator to complete the task in just three steps without the need for an external computer or software installation. The production line solution composed of SE series and EAL series helps you improve test quality and efficiency.
